The two books I did my content analysis on was The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains, by Nicholas Carr and the Cult of the Amateur: How the Internet is killing our culture, by Andrew Keen. While writing my book analysis, I couldn’t help but laugh at many of the things I was writing down. It now makes sense to me why the Internet has such a great impact on our daily lives. Like these books mention, we, as a society, rely heavily on the Internet. It is with us wherever we go on our iPhones, iPads, and Macbooks. We use Google search in almost everything we look up on the Internet, unless of course we are logging onto Facebook, which would either be our homepage or it would be bookmarked already.

These books focused on how the Internet affects our daily lives and our brain activity. They suggest, backed up my sources, that our brain activity is decreasing because everything is simply a click a way. All we have to do it type something into Google and bam, the answer shows up. I don’t agree with this statement because I still think we have a lot to think about and we are constantly challenging ourselves to learn. I think we are learning in different ways than other generations.

These books also summed up how the Internet is affecting our culture. How sexual predators are finding information faster with all the social media websites available. They are talk about how plagiarism has become a huge problem with our society. These books suggest people are copy and pasting work from the Internet and claiming it as their own. This is not allowed. Just like it is not allowed to be done with books and magazines. It was very interesting to me to read just how much the Internet and our technology is affecting the way we live today.

My analysis provides an in-dept looks at these books. It provides the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to technology and the use of the Internet. It also suggests solutions to the arising problems, although these solutions don’t prove to be enough. Is our society slowly loosing its values and morals? Are we creating an unsafe world for our children and grandchildren? These questions are all addressed in my final content analysis.

KingDavidMCO435: The future of turning people into social media!

KingDavidMCO435: The future of turning people into social media!:
This is a very interesting blog post. I can’t honestly think how much more advanced technology will get. I don’t even think many people thought it would become as advanced as it is today. I do not know how they would humanize social media. I mean, there is really no way that Facebook would be able to become a human. It is controlled by a human but I think that will be as far as it goes. I do hope technology progresses because it has been a great asset to our society.

Social technology, from past to present to future is the last section of study in my MCO435 social media class for Spring 2012. I came across an online article that attempted to address the future of social technology .

The article starts off by stating that every day there are emerging…

I am very interested in “going green” and I believe more people need to do it. Unfortunately, I just don’t think people really know what that means. I think this is a great way for the word to spread. It is so easy to change a light bulb to a CFL. Social media would be a great way to spread the word and get people to become more aware of the “going green” movement.

Austin, Texas, is home to weirdos, the annual South by Southwest festival (SXSW), the capital building and a giant movement of gourmet food trucks. What does this have to do with…

Some people love it and some people hate it. I, for one, LOVE it. I think it is a great way to express yourself. For me, I try to update that pictures at least of couple times a month. Sometimes I put photos of me and my friends and other times I post pictures of places that I have visited or would love to visit. I currently have Santa Monica Pier as my Facebook Cover Photo. This is my favorite place in Los Angles because it has the beach and an amusement park.

emilybrooker:

There are so many new features that came out with Facebook timeline. I think one of the most important are cover photos. Cover photos for Facebook timeline are the newest way to customize your Facebook, however most people have not been using this newest feature to its fullest.

Your cover photo says a lot about you. It is giving your most creative peers the opportunity to make their timeline stand out, which is why it is so important to really think about what your cover photo says about you.

This kind of creativity is great. However, there is one thing that I think is more important: keeping your cover photo fresh and up-to-date. This is why I think you should think of your cover photo as your weekly or monthly status.

This concept is how businesses should think of their Facebook timelines.

I must admit, my cover photo is not the greatest, which is why I am giving myself a cover photo challenge. I want to work in the music industry and music is my life. Starting this week, I will be choosing a band / musician to highlight on my Facebook cover photo and write about on my blog. This is my attempt to connect all of my social media platforms, as well as start the routine of updating my Facebook, as well as all of my social media, on a consistent basis.

A further explanation of my challenge, including my reason (musically), can be found on my blog, Going Deaf. You can also read my weekly explanations of why I chose an artist on my blog every week.

How are you going to keep your timeline fresh and creative?

After class on Tuesday with our discussion about politics and political campaigns it really got me thinking about what to expect for this year.

Very interesting article. Personally I have never taken a break from all social media outlets. However, I go days with out check one site or another. For me, social media is all about how you use it. There are ways to have meaningful conversations via Facebook or any other outlet and ways to stay out of the public eye. On the other hand, I don’t think it replaces face to face communication.

This is definitely not very private and I don’t feel like this is a good thing. In order for us to have true privacy, we must not be tracked at all. That is not the case at all with Facebook and their privacy settings. It doesn’t actually bother me that bad but I must say it was surprising to find this information out!

jroy9390:

You may or may not have realized that Facebook knows where you’ve been, what songs you’re listening to, what news articles you just read, and even who you are creeping on. According to Facebook’s privacy policy: “We receive data from the computer, mobile phone or other device you use to access…

I recently blogged about his topic and I find it interesting that colleges would actually think this would be ok. Can you say invasion of privacy? I would never give up my Facebook password to a university. Not because I am scared of what is posted on my Facebook, but because I just don’t feel they need to have access to that kind of information. They already require us to give them all our personal information like address, social security number, and other information. We should not have to give our passwords to colleges. We need to have some sort of privacy!

Continuing on the topic of privacy and social media, I recently came across an article written by Todd Pheifer on Yahoo news. I’m almost positive that one of your friends has posted a link to this 30 minute documentary. This is not a blog about whether you agree or disagree with the video or whether you are going to donate or not donate to the cause. This is simply a blog post to explain how social media can spread the news faster than the speed of lighting.

Over the past six days, Kony 2012 has become the most viral video in history with over 100 million views. This beats Susan Boyles: Britain’s Got Talent and Lady Gaga: Bad Romance. These videos took over nine days to reach 100 million views while Lady Gaga’s video took 18 days. This truly goes to show the power that social media has in our society today.

According to a recent Huffington Post article, the world has witnessed how young people utilize social media in order to create awareness of a particular issue. Kony 2012 is simply the most recent example of this. Social media is increasingly becoming more and more popular. This particular video has reached over 67 million people in just six days. That is incredible! Of course, social media is not always used for passing along good news. It can also be used to spread negativity and gossip.

Along with the good this video has done, it has also received a lot of criticism and negativity. It has led to numerous debates and arguments through comments. Over 500,000 remarks have been made on this particular video. This goes to show that not only are people watching the video, they are also expressing their opinions on the topic. This goes to show that social media not only allows us to spread the word faster, but also allows us to interact with people we may never meet in person. Whether this interaction is negative or positive, it allows the user to voice their opinions.

Social media has come a long way since it was first introduced to the public. I wonder if the next viral video can reach 100 million views in three days. Or could it even reach that many views in one day? I guess we will have to wait and see what the future holds for social media.

Happy Blogging!

Adam Haught

Can I Get Some Privacy Please?

Privacy tends to be a huge issue when it comes to social media. But employers and colleges around the nation are taking the invasion of privacy to a whole new level. A recent article from MSNBC warned students and future employees they may have to give up their privacy in order to work/go to college. You may be thinking this will affect everyone who is applying to college. This is where you would be wrong.

Student athletes are the only ones affected by this measure thus far. And it is not a voluntary measure. When going through the application process, if you are a student athlete, you would be required to become “friends” with at least one member of the administrative staff. This means you would have to befriend any ONE of your coaches. Becoming friends with your coach allows them to keep track of all your posts you allow actual friends to see. If students do not do this, they do not get to play the sport. Would you allow this?

We have the constitution protecting our rights but it seems someone always finds a way to get around that, or make it seem like they are not invading our privacy. As the article states, people have an incredible amount of personal information on their Facebook pages and other social media websites that it has basically become an online diary. I don’t want random people viewing all the information that I have posted up there. With the new timeline layout, it will take you back to information from when you first signed up for Facebook. For many, this is several years of information. And I don’t know about you, but I am not going to search through all that and take down things that “may” be inappropriate.

I believe this is an absolute invasion of our privacy. We should not have to become friends with someone just so they can keep tabs on the posts we are posting. Before this, students were asked to give up their username and passwords. This would be absolutely crazy. I would never trust a university to keep that information safe. With all this information, where and when are we going to draw the line? When are people going to stop trying to take away our privacy? As American’s, we have a right to privacy and it should stay this way!

We need some government action on this issue. Many people think that the government should not get involved in social media and privacy issues. But in this case, I think it definitely needs to happen soon. Without some sort of government action, our privacy will be lost forever!

I found this very interesting because even though I have heard of LinkedIn and have an account with them, I never knew who the founder was. Unlike Facebook, which the founder is extremely prominent in our society. If you are running a business and have social media sites, they should be monitored consistently. There are many things that people will say just because they don’t like your company. Unfortunately, this is mostly done through social media so anyone can see that. It is important to understand what should and shouldn’t be posted on social media and it is important to understand the entire concept of social media. Like you mentioned, word of mouth is the most important aspect to maintain customers!

tiredryan:

I thought this article was very interesting and relevant to our class because it relates to LinkedIn and how the founder of LinkedIn views social media and what he believes is effective ways to increase your social media skills and knowledge.

In the first paragraph they talk about how the founder of LinkedIn, Reid Hoffman says that, “the key to career success is understanding the dynamics of networks and how to leverage them to your benefit.” I think this is a great point by him because if you can understand the dynamics of networks and understand how to leverage them to your benefit you will be well off when it comes to getting a job in the future. If you can use your networks effectively, you can use connections to help you get a foot in the door, an interview, a job, or sponsors and donations to start up a company.

He goes on to talk about Dunbar’s number, which is that the human brain can only maintain 150 connections at once, but Hoffman says that the number is being made less relevant by the amount of technology increases in the passed years. By having so many “friends” or “followers” you can stay in the loop with endless amounts of people but just refreshing your page and spending 10 minutes reading through all of the updates.

I think that Hoffman does a great job in his speech to describe how you are not just what you make yourself out to be, but you are also what other people say about you. He stated, “you are the company you keep.” Using the term “network identity” to describe the connections that one has, he says, “the brand of you is not just what you broadcast about yourself, but what others say about you.” I found this interesting because with your network you can be connected to thousands of people, so you really have to watch what your doing, and try to not do anything to affect the wrong people in a poor way. The way you go about your business is important and you have to make sure you are not doing anything to portray yourself negatively because then it is out there and other people who see it will have a changed perception of you potentially. However if you are portraying yourself in a bright light, many people may speak you up and word may get out that you are a good person that would be a good fit for a company.

By following the points that Hoffman talks about in his speech, you can get yourself better connected and put yourself in a great position. By knowing your networks you can jump start yourself and use it effectively. Word of mouth is very important and by having a positive image you may be portrayed very brightly by many people.

I must admit this is becoming a bit ridiculous. I feel that every major internet company is trying to sue Facebook or something similar to that notion. Why can’t they just leave Facebook alone and move on. This topic has been bothering me for quite sometime. I believe that everyone is simply jealous of Facebook and the popularity of the website. What company wouldn’t be jealous? I think Facebook is a great site and it has truly changed the way we live. Yahoo needs to get over it and just go on with their business.

Right now there is an all out war between Yahoo and Facebook, well atleast it is about to be an all out war. Currently Yahoo is upset because of Facebooks intellectual property. From this article it was said that Yahoo is “but perhaps none is sadder than the spectacle of an ailing Internet giant…

The Academy Awards, otherwise known as the Oscars, is one of the most watched award shows in the world. Viewable in hundreds of different countries, everyone around the world has access to this once a year television event. I’m sure, like me, you were watching the awards and posting your opinions on any of the social media websites. Who knew this would be tracked and an article would be written with all the statistics.

The Super Bowl, the Grammys, and the Academy Awards are just a few of the television events that get major social media buzz. Who is the best dressed? Who is the worst dressed? I can’t believe he/she won for that? I never saw this movie before, how come it is winning so many awards? These were just some of the things I tweeted about during the award show. What were you tweeting? And do you find it disrupting to be tweeting while watching TV, especially if you are with other people? Apparently, not many people think it is disruptive. There were over 4.2 million social media activities and mentions during the award show. That’s a huge number if you ask me.

What were some of the biggest moments that created the most social media buzz? Well, I’m sure, like me, you were buzzing about Octavia Spencer winning Best Supporting Actress. That’s right, this was one of the most popular buzzed about moments racking in over 31,000 mentions per minute! Hopefully they were all positive mentions as she definitely deserved this award. Her role in The Help proved outstanding. Oh, and what did you think about the Cirque du Soleil performance? Well, about 30,000 mentions were happening per minute during that performance. I can’t lie, I was simply too shocked with this performance to tweet about it. My eyes were glued to the television! I was not about to pick up my phone and write something about it on social media. I was too afraid I would miss something amazing!

Unfortunately, for us watching this award show in Arizona, we did not make the list for top five states to have the most Twitter activity. I think that has something to do with the fact we don’t have the largest population. As stated in the article, California and New York were the top two states for Twitter activity. Want to take a guess on which cities had the most social media buzz. I’ll give you a hint…they are the largest city in America and the second largest city in America. If you guessed New York City and Los Angeles you would be correct. Again, I think this is based on the amount of people these two cities have. Of course it makes sense they would have the most social media buzz!

Anyway, I thought I would blog about this and get your feedback. Do you think social media is taking over the way we watch TV? Is it more important to us to tweet our thoughts and feelings during these types of Television shows? This reminds me a lot about tweeting in class? It is obviously distracting to us because we not fully paying attention to the topic. What if we miss something important and tweet a wrong piece of information? I think we need to be excellent in multitasking in order to make sure we are tweeting accurately and not missing anything important.

One last thing…I was using an iPhone to tweet during the award shows. It seems that smartphones and tablets outnumbered computers. If you were tweeting during the Oscars, were you using a laptop or a smartphone/tablet?

Happy Blogging!

As a college student myself, I find myself using a mobile site at least once a day, if not more. Like you, those statistics do not come as a shock to me. Everything that has been stated in this blog makes sense. People with a higher level of education are most likely being paid more; therefore, they can afford the cost of a smartphone. As we all know, it is not that cheap to own a smartphone. It is intriguing that the article suggests that girls are smarter than boys when using mobile sites. I have no comments at this point because I would have nothing to back up my argument except for the fact that I am a male and I feel I am definitely mobile site savvy. Very interesting blog post to read!

">how to blog. Since I have never blogged before, I was clueless of how to begin. Yes, I understand that I am supposed to write something but coming up with something to write about was a struggle. I sat in front of my computer screen for almost an hour trying to conquer this blog, when suddenly this article appeared. It was like magic! Let’s discuss what it had to say.

Blogging can be terrifying…do you agree with this? I know I do (or did) before I read this article. Talking about blogging in class the last few times has been a huge cause of stress for me. Everything else that we have talked about and all the other assignments we have been assigned I have had previous experience with. This, not so much. So why was I completely stressed out over writing this blog? Because I was unfamiliar with it. As a a general rule of thumb, when something is unfamiliar or when something is new, we usually don’t take well to it. We often tense up and fight about it, or even leave it behind and never think about it again. Unfortunately for me, if I did this, I would get an F on this assignment. That wouldn’t fly well with me. So what did I do, I just started writing.

When I started writing, words started to come to me and sentences began to flow. I thought to myself, whoa, this is out of control. I was familiar with the topic of social media (which is what these blogs are supposed to be about), but I was not familiar with the blogging platform. To be honest, I hadn’t even read a blog before this. Since blogging is a form of social media, I decided to write my first blog on my thoughts and feelings about blogging. I can’t tell you how to successfully write a blog, but I can tell you that once you get started, it is hard to stop.

As I was reading over the article, it stated that some people think blogs should be less than 250 words. They also stated that some believe blogs should contain between 400 and 600 words. Do you think there should be a requirement to make a blog successful? I think a blog should be however long you want it to be. But, I do think it should be relatively short and simple. We, as readers, don’t want to read a novel.

After writing this post, I found that blogging is a lot easier than I anticipated. The articles I found helped ease my mind and successfully complete this blog. I would like to know if anyone else had a hard time writing their first blog? What did you do to overcome that hardship? If you have blogged more than once, did you find it easier and easier to begin the blog?

Happy Blogging!

Growing up in the 21st century, privacy has been an issue we have been dealing with for most of our lives. How much is too much personal information to share on the internet? With all the social media websites, there is really not a right answer to that question, therefore, it is strictly what you think and feel comfortable with. When I first signed up for Facebook, I never though much about the privacy issues. That was over five years ago. However, now that almost everyone has a Facebook account and employers are looking at them, I think more about what and what I should not post. Privacy is definitely more of an issue in our society today. I am very careful about posting my phone number, e-mail address, and mailing address on Facebook. Even though Facebook ensures us their privacy settings are legit, I often don’t trust them. We will never know for certain what they really do with our personal information. With that being said, privacy is something that I definitely keep in the back burner of my mind. Will privacy issues keep me from using social media? Absolutely not! We just have to be aware of the growing issues.

Charlie, I 100 percent agree with you, and this has been an issue I have been talking about for years. We as americans act as if we are so sheltered and should not be subjected to anything bad, when in reality, that’s just life. You said it perfectly, words are just words and if you don’t take the meaning behind it personally then we wouldn’t be so easily offended. I wish Americans would indeed stop acting like children and look past the name calling, nudity, etc. and just live OUR lives.

Learning another language in college also involves learning about the culture of the countries that speak that language. I’m currently taking German and I’ve become fascinated by their culture to the point where I’m considering applying for jobs located in Berlin. That’s quite a huge step but…
